Healing the Broken Heart: Sin, Alienation, and the Gift of Grace
Published in Paperback by Chalice Press (January, 1997)
Author: Susan L. Nelson
Average review score:

Participated in her Lecture - Can't wait to read her book !
Although a 'review' might not be the proper description, I felt it was important to recommend the book having listened to her presentation on this subject. If the book can make the connection with the reader like the author connects to her live audience, there is a message that shouldn't be missed.

Healing the Split: Madness or Transcendence: A New Understanding of the Crisis and Treatment of the Mentally Ill
Published in Hardcover by J. P. Tarcher (March, 1991)
Author: John E. Nelson
Average review score:

Healing the Split
This is a wonderful book by an experienced psychiatrist who knows what to ask when a patient says God is telling him what to do. According to Dr. Nelson, sometimes anti-psychotic medications are needed, other times more transpersonal approaches work better. In his Foreword, Ken Wilber calls the book "enormously impressive and profound" and laments that it isn't required reading for psychiatry residents. The book is divided in four parts, dealing in turn with madness and consciousness, the brain, the spirit, and ending with the part on healing. The book is beautifully written with many insights into the non-rational world. My favorite is the explanation of the futility of trying to invalidate a paranoid delusion-logic's razor's edge is no match for the granite of necessity. The book is full of insights into all forms of altered states of consciousness, creativity, and genius, and how they compare to madness. It should forever debunk the myth that creativity and insanity inevitably go hand in hand.

Here All Dwell Free: Stories to Heal the Wounded Feminine
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (November, 1991)
Authors: Gertrud Mueller Nelson and Mueller Gertrud Nelson
Average review score:

A Wonderful Book
Here All Dwell Free may be an awkward title but it is right on. Mueller Nelson has an exquisite but powerful and compelling way of presenting complex and important psychological information so that anyone can understand and benefit. This book pulls one into that mythical land with devils and angels entirely compatible with any religious conviction because she is addressing archetypal issues which all humankind must address or avoid. Mueller-Nelson convinces one to take the risk of looking at one's dark side and points the way to the many individual and social benefits of taking one's life seriously. Another benefit is the lovely prose which leads one deeper and deeper into one's own inner world. Anyone interested in their religious and spiritual life will benefit and enjoy this remarkable book.

The Heritage of Persia (Bibliotheca Iranica, No 1)
Published in Paperback by Mazda Pub (September, 1993)
Author: Richard Nelson Frye
Average review score:

Authoritative Book on Ancient Iran
I first read the Persian translation of this book many years ago before reading this original English version recently. This is one of the best books available on the civilization of ancient Persia (Iran). Unfortunately, the quality of (offset) (re-)printing does not match the quality of its content. However, given that it costs the price of a modest dinner, it is worth the purchase. I found it quite informative -- even though it was first published a few decades ago. Truly an authoritative work and fun to read if you are interested in the history of civilization.

Heroes of Unwritten Story: The Uaw, 1934-39
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (February, 1994)
Authors: Henry Kraus and Nelson Lichtenstein
Average review score:

The author should have discussed the role of the CP
I wrote the introduction to this history/memoir and I'd like to make one "correction." As a unionist and leftist, I wanted make clear the organic role played by the American Communist Party and by such stirling Communists as Wyndam Mortimer in the very early days of the CIO and the UAW. But Henry Kraus was clearly ambivalent about such relevations, even 60 and 70 years after. So in the text, such political candor is muted, and even in the introduction, I acquiesced to the author and dropped a reference to Wyndam Mortimer, who was Kraus' mentor, as a "pioneer Communist." I felt conflicted at the time, and this historiographic thorn has never ceased to irritate, so this note corrects part of the record. I should add, that the book is otherwise excellent and offers a real feel for the internal UAW politics of the 1930s.

Hidden Treasure: Holy Mass
Published in Paperback by Tan Books & Publishers, Inc. (March, 1992)
Authors: St. Leonard, Thomas Nelson Publishers, and St Leonard
Average review score:

great book on the mass
The best book yet on the greatness of the mass and how to attend it to get the most profit from it. This book is packed with wisdom. The author puts more insight into this book than what is contained in a dozen theological treatises. A wonderful classic.
